DongMen Site Reflections
For Dance class, we worked on a few choreographs, and filmed them at the DongMen market site. Here are some of my reflections to the filming.
We were told in the classroom that there were going to be clothing lines on the roof. He created cool ideas of draping clothes over the clothing line, and our dancers dancing in between the line with repeating "dead-looking" movements and gestures. We also planned to suggest the art class to film us with the camera going in between the clothes, making it look like a maze. However, there weren't any clothing lines on the roof, and we had to cut out that part of our choreography.
I feel that the students don't really fit into the "old and dirty" mall, because we are all dressed in clean clothing. Of course, that would be okay if the role of the student was, a student. However, it would be great if students costumes fit into the setting better.
I also thought that our movements were a bit too small for the wide and big rooftop. I would make movements bigger, if we were to film it over.

I agree that wearing different clothing would have complemented the choreography. You adapted well to the resources you had, though.
What were your reactions to the location in general? What is it like for you to witness people living in relative poverty in a place like DongMen surrounded by the relative wealth of Hsinchu? What would you do with a place like DongMen if you were the mayor of Hsinchu? Would you tear it down? leave it? try to revive the industry there? allow people to live there or not?
When I saw the people and the stores, I really wondered how they would make a living. I felt really bad and uncomfortable witnessing the situation. I was also really surprised to see such kindness coming from them to people like us, when they talked with a few of us, and when the lady even offered the box of drinks. If I were the mayer of Hsinchu, I would most likely try to renew the place and help the people to get a better life... but I don't know whether or not it's realistic, and I don't know the options. All that I can say is.. I would try my very best to better those people's lives.
